Cap to prevent wisteria hysteria
THE number of people allowed to see the annual blooms at Jiading Wisteria Garden will be capped at 1,600 at any one time over the next two weeks, local officials said yesterday.
The green space, which opened in 1999, is a popular attraction at this time of year when its more than 100 trees, in 30 varieties, spring into life.
On the busiest day last year, 25,000 people visited the park, said Lu Xianqing, an official with the Jiading District Greenery Bureau.
But this year, the maximum number allowed inside the park at any one time will be limited to 1,600 to ensure everyone’s safety, he said.
“At peak times last year, it was very difficult to walk through the park. People came from all over Shanghai and from out of town,” he said.
The flow of people will be further improved by having separate entrances and exits, he said.
One of the first people to enjoy this year’s blooms was a local woman who declined to give her name.
“It’s just as beautiful as when I came here last year. I told my son to bring his child at the weekend, when the flowers should be in full bloom,” she said.
