Car dealers named and shamed

SEVERAL car dealerships have been charged with cheating consumers into paying high fees for resolving minor problems with their vehicles, the Shanghai Consumer Rights Protection Commission said yesterday.

The Zhaohua Road branch of Shanghai Dongchi Auto Repair Co, which sells Mercedes-Benz cars, charged a person 27,603 yuan (US$4,420) to replace a damper system in a Mercedes ML350, the commission said.

The work should have cost about 100 yuan, it said.

In another case, Shanghai Fande Auto Sales and Service Co, a BMW dealership, charged a customer 100,000 yuan to repair fictional problems with the gearbox of a car, when all that was wrong was a faulty heat sensor, the commission said.

The shop deliberately duped the customer, it said.

Shanghai Tongben Auto Sales Service Co, an authorized dealer for Dongfeng Honda, and Shanghai Ruifeng Auto Sales Service Co, a Citroen dealership, were also found guilty of overcharging, the commission said.

The companies were named after the commission sent vehicles to 12 dealerships with known problems to see how they would be treated.

Just five of the companies accurately identified the true problems and charged accordingly, it said.
