Car plate thief sentenced to one and a half years

A man who stole nine car plates and extorted more than 1,800 yuan (US$282) from car owners in Shanghai was sentenced to one year and a half in prison and fined 3,000 yuan, the Zhabei District People's Court said yesterday.

The convict surnamed Tian, 29, was caught in a cyber cafe on Haining Road on March 18.

Prosecutors said Tian stole nine Zhejiang Province plates from cars parked along Baoyuan Road and left his mobile number on car windows. When the victims called, Tian would ask for 200 yuan to 400 yuan for each plate.

Tian said he came to Shanghai in February and became a background actor on some sets. He learned the method of selling stolen car plates from a co-worker and found it an easy way to make money.
