Car rental firms to be called to account

POLICE said they will suspend licenses of car rental companies if they do not help recover fines from delinquent drivers.
In Yangpu District, police visited Kaishun Rental’s office on Ningguo Road yesterday after finding 31 of its 185 cars had outstanding fines. One had notched up 15 fines within five months.
Most offenses were for illegal lane-changing and blocking zebra crossings. Kaishun general manager Wu Kai said the company would ask drivers to pay as soon as possible.
“We require users to deposit 3,000 to 5,000 yuan (US$440-730) for a month and inform them of offenses when they return the cars,” Wu said.
“If they fail to pay the fine within a month, we’ll take money from their deposit to pay in their stead.”
Police say companies that do not take responsibility face suspension as part of the crackdown.
