Card cheaters jailed for fraud
A GANG of 12 young cardsharps who cheated during card games and got money through usury were sentenced to jail terms for fraud by the Baoshan District People’s Court yesterday.
The prison terms ranged from seven months to 10 years. Prosecutors said the 12 people would lure victims to a hotel room where they cheated while gambling with cards. After taking all the money from the victims, the cardsharps would offer usury to them and forced them to write undertakings, for which they got more money. The gang profited to the tune of 1.558 million yuan (US$257,291) in all. One of the gang members, Shen Mingle, later surrendered to police and helped them nab his accomplices. The gang was also fined between 2,000 yuan and 50,000 yuan respectively by the court.
