Cartoon fans drawn to products
ANIMATION derivative products, from clothes and handset shells to handmade models, attracted plenty of attention at a fair that opened yesterday in Shanghai, highlighting the growing demand for cartoon-related merchandise in the domestic market.
The World of WarCraft, Star Wars and Japanese cartoons were the most popular titles for buyers of derivative products, thanks to their strong brand profile.
Chinese firms such as the developer of Pleasant Goat and Big Big Wolf are expanding their business from animation to derivative products, Shanghai Daily learned at the 12th China International Cartoon & Game Expo (CCG Expo).
“Derivative products are no longer simple toys for kids,” said Zhong Luming, vice chairman of the China Animation Association. “It’s a serious” business model for publishers in China.”
By 2015, the animation industry had an audience of more than 220 million people in China. The market revenue grew about 20 percent annually to reach 31.6 billion yuan in 2015, industry officials said during the fair.
Several dozen visitors queued in front of booths selling limited editions of the derivative products of Star Wars and popular Japanese and Taiwan titles.
Chinese publishers are also seeking opportunities in the market. Guangdong-based Creative Power Entertaining, the developer of the popular titles Great Goat and Big Big Wolf, has launched a clothing line based on a new online animation drama called Fun Alliance.
The CCG Expo, which is at the Shanghai World Expo Exhibition & Convention Center, ends on Monday.
