Catholics told to avoid cathedral
THE Xujiahui Cathedral yesterday asked patrons to find another venue to celebrate Christmas eve this year as the celebrations had to be moved to a much smaller venue that can only hold a fraction of the cathedral, which is closed due to renovations.
Christmas Eve celebrations at Xujiahui Cathedral usually attract about 10,000 residents each year, said Shen Baozhi, chancellor of the diocese. This year, however, mass has to be moved to a nearby building that can hold about 250 people.
“We suggested our prayers and visitors avoid coming ... and move to other Catholic churches in the city,” Shen said, adding that six other churches around the city offered Christmas eve mass in English and French.
