Caught with fireworks
A MAN in Jiading District became the first person to fall foul of Shanghai’s ban on fireworks inside the Outer Ring Road.
Police said the man had set off three packs of fireworks, with another five packs still to go, when officers approached him near Cao’an Road just 90 seconds after midnight on Thursday. Jin was fined 100 yuan (US$16) and his unlit fireworks confiscated. The new rule, announced late last month, was introduced as part of the city’s efforts to curb pollution. It also applies across the city on heavily polluted days.
