Celebrity drug ban in effect

SHANGHAI’S new drug control regulation, which includes a ban on celebrity drug users from working on major television, film and radio programs for at least three years, comes into effect today.

Under the regulation approved on December 30 by the Shanghai People’s Congress, producers that hire celebrities who have been convicted of drug-related crimes or have undergone drug rehabilitation within the previous three years will be fined 100,000 (US$15,500) to 200,000 yuan. Broadcasters airing the material produced will also be subject to fines.

The regulation was introduced after several Chinese actors and actresses, including Jaycee Chan, the son of film star Jackie Chan, were caught using drugs.

Li Jiajie, a program director at Shining On Culture Communication Co, said: “Though the ban only limits their appearance in major roles, it almost bans them totally. I don’t think any company would take the risk of hiring actors or actress with tainted records.”
