Cellist wins payout after assault by student’s dad

A MAN has been given an eight-month prison sentence suspended for a year for attacking his daughter’s cello teacher after the musician ended their tutoring arrangement.

The defendant, surnamed Xu, was also ordered to pay the 58-year-old Chinese-Belgian cellist, surnamed Gao, 200,000 yuan (US$32,200) in compensation, the Jing’an District People’s Court said yesterday.

The dispute between the two men began when Gao, who performs with a local chamber orchestra, told the daughter in October that he no longer wanted to teach her.

The court heard that the musician was unhappy that his student had failed to name him as her tutor when she was awarded an international music prize.

After Xu heard the news he asked Gao to change his mind. When the cellist refused, Xu attacked him, the court said.

The fight ended when the police were called, but Xu was unsatisfied and arranged for three men to assault Gao later the same day.

In the second incident, the musician suffered a concussion after being struck on the head and one of the fingers on his right hand was fractured, the court said.

Xu was arrested for the crime and put in detention. Gao also filed a civil suit against him, which resulted in the compensation payment.
