Changning opens first in series of tunnels

Changning District yesterday opened a pedestrian tunnel in Hongqiao that connects L’Avenue, a shopping and office complex, with Friendship Shopping Mall.

The tunnel is part of the district government’s plan to become a “world-class central business district.”

The 43-meter-long tunnel beneath Xianxia Road is one of four pedestrian tunnels planned to connect 10 shopping malls and office buildings in the area — by building an underground pedestrian system beneath the central business area.

Two tunnels beneath Ziyun and Zunyi roads will be opened in June.

The Ziyun Road Tunnel will link The Place commercial complex and the Tianshan Soho office building, while the Zunyi Road Tunnel will connect the Soho building and the Hongqiao Tiandu shopping complex.

Construction will start soon on the fourth tunnel, also beneath Ziyun Road, which will connect The Place and L’Avenue.

People will also be able to reach the Parkson Newcore City Mall, Hui Jin Department Store and Printemps Department Store via the tunnel system.

The wheelchair-accessible tunnels are decorated to represent the four seasons. No restaurant or store will be allowed to operate inside the tunnels. Ziyun Road will be closed while the fourth tunnel is built.

Hongqiao commercial zone covers three square kilometers and has a total of 400,000 square meters of shopping complexes along Zunyi, Tianshan, Xianxia and Loushanguan roads.

The commercial zone has launched a trial operation to allow consumers to park vehicles at parking lots of any shopping mall within the area for up to five hours free of charge during holidays.

That helped the daily number of customers to the shopping zone to rise to over 50,000 during the three-day Labor Day holiday, compared with only 15,000 normally, according to the commission. Shoppers spent 5.5 million yuan (US$800,000) , compared with an average 2 million yuan over previous Labor holiday periods.

Upon the completion of the tunnels, visitors will also be able to reach Hongqiao Art Center from the shopping malls, according to the district government.
