'Charity Stars' sought

STARS of the non-astral type come in many forms and stars of charity are up there with the most important.

Any individual, organization or company in the city involved in charity causes can sign up for selection as a "Charity Star," Shanghai Charity Foundation said yesterday.

People can also recommend others who have made great contributions to social welfare, especially for relief in the areas hit by the massive earthquake in China's southwest Sichuan Province in May 2008, officials said.

"We don't really care how much money people have donated," said Guo Kairong, a deputy director of the foundation.

"What we care about is people's passion and devotion toward helping others."

The foundation will select 30 "Charity Stars" and another 20 other award recipients after an evaluation process.

The results will be announced in January.

A hotline, 6258-4343, has been set up for accepting nominations. People should hand over written material on nominees' stories of 600 to 1,000 Chinese characters to the organization.

People will be able to vote for the nominees at the city's Web portals, such as eastday.com and xinmin.cn, from October.
