Charity lays out use of donations
THE Shanghai Charity Foundation yesterday said that out of 209 million yuan (US$33 million) collected at its annual charity carnival "True Love Under the Blue Sky," 122 million yuan has been used to help local needy people.
The remaining 87 million yuan will be used on other charity programs but the foundation didn't specify what they would be. The foundation said the money collected during the event came from donations of passers-by on the street, charity get-togethers, charity auctions and donations from companies and organizations.
Most of the fund went to more than 193,000 people to help them spend a more prosperous Chinese New Year. The rest went to communities for buying food, clothes and journals for needy people, officials said.
This is the first time the foundation announced how donations to the 20-year-old event were used. Earlier, the foundation published its first annual fiscal report, but it did not say exactly how a surplus of almost 183 million yuan was used.
