Chauffeur jailed for stealing 150,000 yuan from boss

A chauffeur who stole deluxe cigarettes and gold bars worth about 150,000 yuan (US$24,000) from his boss was sentenced to five years in prison and fined 10,000 yuan by the Zhabei District People's Court.

The 29-year-old convict, Lu Ping, stole 37 cartons of Chunghwa cigarettes his boss stored in the car trunk for social activities last November.

He sold the cigarettes to pay his gambling debts and stole four gold bars worth 130,400 yuan from his boss's home in December, the court heard.

Lu said his boss was very careless and didn't notice the theft until he found the gold bars were missing on January 2 and alerted the police.

Prosecutors said Lu was hired in 2009 with a monthly salary of 3,000 yuan. He had been jailed for five years for larceny.

Lu turned himself in to police in March and returned the four gold bars to his boss.
