Cheated online by cousin
A man was cheated online by his cousin out of more than 60,000 yuan (US$8,810), police said yesterday. The victim, surnamed Wang, was “introduced” on WeChat to a woman by a suspect, surnamed Cui, who was Wang’s cousin.
Cui allegedly said the woman didn’t like the look of Wang online, so Cui then impersonated her with the intention of defrauding his cousin. Cui used the woman’s profile picture, deleted her authentic account from Wang’s phone and replaced it with a phony account.
Wang said he had often made attempts to meet his online contact during their two-year “relationship” but was turned down. He became suspicious when he was blocked on WeChat, police said.
Before that he had transferred money several times to the online “girlfriend.”
Wang later discovered that the money he had sent had been transferred to Cui’s WeChat account and told Jiading police.
Police said Cui, who has been detained, owned up and said that he was in need of money as his business was failing.
