Cheating prostitute sparked murder

A MAN who tried to help his friend after he had been cheated by a prostitute was beaten and stabbed to death, a court heard yesterday.

The man who stabbed him, Liu Qian, was jailed for life yesterday. His accomplice, Li Yi, who led the others in the attack, was jailed for 15 years. Both were found guilty of manslaughter at Shanghai No. 2 Intermediate People's Court.

The other three were sentenced to three years each for disturbing the social peace.

On March 8 last year, a man surnamed Zhang met Fan, a prostitute, in Lanzhou Road in Yangpu District.

The next day he found the 300 yuan (US$44) in his wallet had been replaced with fake notes.

He called a friend surnamed Qiu. Along with two others, they found Fan and tried to force her to give them 300 yuan.

Li, whose job it was to protect Fan, and his gang rushed at the four armed with bricks and hammers. Li hit Qiu with a brick and Liu stabbed him. Zhang and the others ran off.

The gang was soon caught but Qiu died in hospital.
