Checking in for Shanghai flights in neighboring Wuxi
PASSENGERS can now check in for flights from Shanghai’s airports while in neighboring Wuxi City, after a terminal building opened there yesterday.
This is part of efforts to attract more passengers from the Yangtze River Delta region to the city’s Hongqiao International Airport and Pudong International Airport.
Travelers check in luggage and are issued with boarding cards at Wuxi Terminal Building at Wuxi Bus Station, said Hu Zhihong, deputy director of the Shanghai Airport Authority.
The airport authority then takes them by bus from the Jiangsu Province city to the Shanghai airports.
After a journey of around two hours, passengers can go straight to departures.
Passengers must arrive at Wuxi Terminal Building four hours before takeoff for flights from Hongqiao, and five hours for those departing from Pudong, Hu said.
A similar arrangement exists in neighboring Kunshan City, where Shanghai’s airports opened a terminal building in 2011. Some 400,000 passengers have used the facility.
In Shanghai itself, passengers can check in for flights at both city airports in Jing’an District, taking a shuttle bus from there.
Meanwhile, to handle increasing numbers of passengers, Pudong airport will increase the frequency of takeoffs to 74 per hour from the current 60 from its three runways. And this will rise to 88 per hour by 2018 when two satellite terminals buildings are in operation.
And punctuality has improved at Shanghai’s airports, said Hu. Some 85 percent now depart on time, compared to 70 percent over the past two years.
