Cheetah's quints set a record

A cheetah living in the Shanghai Wildlife Park has given birth to quintuplets after having septuplets just last April, park officials said yesterday.

The five new cubs were born on December 16. After giving birth to seven cubs last spring, the mother, Lao Da, recovered quickly and went back to her group. Among those in her group was her mate, and in August she became pregnant for a second time. The father, named Da Hu, and the mother are both seven years old and grew up together.

Now the newborn cubs are living in a special area in the park, under carers' artificial raising. The area is equipped with central heating for the cubs to fight the chilly weather, park officials said.

In 2006, some 40 cheetah cubs were born in the park, and 31 survived, which created a record in Asia. But never before had a park cheetah given birth to 12 cubs within a year, according to park officials.
