Chef killed ‘for imitating man’

A GUEST in a hotel in Hongkou District has been held by police after a young chef was stabbed to death there in the early hours of Saturday.

It is claimed that the victim, surnamed Xin, had angered his attacker by imitating him.

The incident occurred about 1am in the hotel on Dantu Road, rooms in which are rented to businesses as staff accommodation.

Xin, from neighboring Jiangsu Province, and a colleague surnamed Zhou, both 22 and working as chefs at a restaurant on Siping Road, were staying in rooms rented by their employer.

According to Zhou, a man and woman were walking in front of them in the corridor. When Xin imitated what the man was saying he became angry.

Zhou, from central China’s Henan Province, told Shanghai Television that he and Xin did not know the pair.

When an argument started, Zhou said he first attempted to act as a peacemaker but that the man hit him and a fight broke out.

Zhou said the man ran to his room and returned brandishing a knife.

He stabbed Xin in the stomach and chased after Zhou, stabbing him in the chest and stomach, it is claimed.

Other hotel residents awakened by the commotion called police.

Xin was pronounced dead at the scene while Zhou was rushed to hospital. He is now in stable condition.

Police said the suspect, whose name was not disclosed, remained in the hotel afterward and was held there.

Investigations are continuing.
