Chicken essences back on the shelves

A LOCAL supermarket has put Brand's chicken essences back on the shelves after being convinced the products are safe.

Shanghai NGS Supermarket (Group) Co Ltd decided to resume selling the essence after being assured by the quality authorities in south China's Guangzhou City, where Brand's chicken essence's manufacturer is based, NGS's quality official, Gan Pingzhong, told the Oriental Morning Post.

The Guangzhou authority said all the Brand's chicken essence supplied in China is produced at the Guangzhou factory and had nothing to do with those recalled in the United States.
NGS yesterday told its 3,500 supermarkets and convenience stores citywide to resume sales, Gan said.

NGS was the first retailer in Shanghai to remove the products in Shanghai after hearing of the recall by US authorities. The US Department of Agriculture (USDA) demanded a recall of the popular health supplement because of "issues with import regulations."

But NGS remains cautious about resuming sales of other products where there is a dispute about quality - including Johnson & Johnson baby shampoo.

"We are still waiting for the conclusions of the local quality authority's investigation," Gan said.

The investigation was launched after the non-profit Campaign for Safe Cosmetics reported that traces of the chemicals formaldehyde and 1,4-dioxane were present in dozens of popular children's bath products, including Johnson & Johnson's Baby Shampoo and Procter & Gamble's Kandoo hand wash.

Both chemicals are by-products of the manufacturing process and are not listed as ingredients.

J&J said the consumers' organization was distorting the facts and that its "false suspicions" had triggered unnecessary concerns among parents. The products are safe, it insisted.
