Child beds and clothes fail tests

A quarter of children’s clothes and beds failed quality tests in spot checks by the Shanghai Bureau of Quality and Technical Supervision.

The bureau said yesterday that of 81 batches of tested children’s wear, 16 batches did not meet quality standards.

The bureau found problems over safety requirements on ropes and strings as well as cancer-causing decomposable aromatic amine dyes. There were also problems with fiber content, seam strength and color fastness.

The tests on children’s beds and playpens produced an even higher failure rate — 44 percent of the 25 tested batches failed the test with problems that included structural safety.

They also had risks of causing suffocation or falling over when children were sleeping or playing in them.

The bureau added that some companies had failed to provide complete instructions.
