Child given to father

A ONE-YEAR-OLD baby boy found abandoned by his teenage mother in a lane in Huangpu District has been given to his father’s family to look after, police said yesterday.
The 17-year-old mother, surnamed Chen, laid the baby on the pavement in a lane off Quxi Road on Saturday, surveillance camera footage showed.
The child’s crying alerted passers-by who called the police. He was in good health, officers said.
Officers traced Chen who told police she decided to abandon her child because she’d met a new boyfriend and feared that the child would get in the way of their relationship.
Under Chinese law, if the child is unharmed, no charges are brought. In any case, Chen is too young to have faced criminal charges, police told Shanghai Daily.
