Chongming acts on illegal hunters

SURVEILLANCE and infrared cameras are to be installed at wildlife habitats in an attempt to catch illegal wildlife hunters in Chongming District.

The city government is soliciting opinions on a draft to set up a game reserve in Chongming in an effort to protect wildlife on the island.

Chongming wildlife habitats are usually sparsely populated by humans and are not covered by traditional monitoring systems, so it is hoped the electronic surveillance will deter illegal hunting and provide clues as to who the hunters are, officials said.

Hunting on the island for wildlife included on national or local protection lists, along with animals deemed to have scientific research value, is banned unless hunting licenses have been issued.

Food comprising protected wildlife is prohibited, and businesses selling such food face a fine of up to 20,000 yuan (US$2,940), and those who eat it a fine of up to 2,000 yuan.

Game reserve signs will be set up at key areas such as the habitats of wildlife and animal and bird migration channels, while wildlife protection signs will be set up parks, department stores, hotels, bus and Metro stations, and entrances and the exits of expressways, on the island.

A game reserve patrol system will be set up, and farmers can apply for compensation if crops are harmed by wildlife.

Whistle-blowers will be rewarded for alerting authorities on illegal hunting, and the transportation and selling of wildlife, according to the draft. Officials will also be dismissed for dereliction of duty in terms of wildlife protection.

Chongming, which has large intertidal zones and wetlands, is a key stopping-point for a variety of migrating birds.

The island is home to an abundance of wildlife and more than 290 species of birds have been spotted in Dongtan, including the hooded crane, mandarin duck and little curlew.

Approximately 1 million migratory birds make Dongtan their temporary home every year.
