Cigarette thief gets 3-year sentence
A man who stole Chunghwa cigarettes, a leading Chinese brand, at stores by pretending to buy them and replacing them with fakes, was sentenced to three years in prison with a three-year reprieve, the Changning District People's Court said yesterday.
The convict, Jiang Xin, made off with 24,000 yuan (US$3,792) worth of cigarettes in a series of convenience store thefts last year. Each time, Jiang asked to buy 10 cartons of Chunghwa cigarettes and put them into his bag, the court heard.
Before he paid, Jiang told the clerk to get him several cases of mineral water, and while the clerk was away he replaced the cigarettes with fake packs. He then canceled the purchase, returned the fakes and left with the genuine cigarettes.
