City also has that shrinking feeling

SHANGHAI families have been shrinking and the majority of registered couples now have just one child, local health authorities said yesterday.

There were 5.24 million families of registered residents in 2012, of which 3.5 million, or 66.8 percent, had only one child. The average size of local families was 2.5 persons, according to the 2010 census, 0.3 smaller than in 2000.

In 1949, when the People’s Republic of China was established, the average family size was 4.9 persons.
