City ‘best in country for cultural services’
SHANGHAI has the best cultural services in China per person, according to a report published yesterday by Shanghai Normal University.
This is the third time the city has ranked first in the annual survey based on indicators including public cultural investment and the utilization of cultural facilities.
It covers 31 provinces, municipalities and autonomous regions in China.
With its per capita cultural expenditure increased to just over 120 yuan (US$19.6) last year from 103 yuan in 2012, Shanghai came first in government expenditure on public cultural services in China, the survey found.
The number of museums grew from 36 to 90 last year, while cultural performers increased from 3,663 to 6,024.
The Pudong New Area ranked top on all three district indicators — public cultural institutes, activities and utilization of the services — ahead of downtown districts. Researchers linked this to the 2010 World Expo in Pudong.
