City drafts new rules to beef up food safety

SHANGHAI will enact four local food safety regulations on freshly-made beverage, the hygiene of central kitchens, the hygiene of take-out food, and the testing of banned hotpot additives, Shanghai Food and Drug Administration says today.

The four draft rules have been discussed by Shanghai food safety authorities and will be implemented within two months, the administration says.

A new testing method will be introduced to quickly detect traces of poppy shells that are illegally used by some hotpot restaurants to make customers addicted. Shanghai FDA found some local eateries use poppy shells to draw customers years ago.
