City fires down
SHANGHAI saw a significant drop in the number of fires last year, officials said yesterday. There were 20 percent fewer fires in 2015 (4,606) over 2014, while the number of people killed (52) and injured (40) declined by 11.9 percent and 27.3 percent respectively.
Carelessness and electrical issues were the main causes, accounting for more than half. More than 70 percent of the fatalities were in suburban areas, the worst hit being Minhang District with 10. Elderly people were still the most vulnerable group — 28 of those killed were over age 60.
