City gears up for shopping fest
TECHNOLOGY will be a major player at this year’s annual Shanghai Shopping Festival, which kicks off on Friday, with online and offline activities that is expected to test the city’s appetite for consumption in the digital age.
At five popular shopping spots in Putuo, Changning, Yangpu districts and the Pudong New Area, an activity, “shaking mobile phones,” will pick winners for free gifts, the Shanghai Commission of Commerce said yesterday.
The gifts include LCD television sets, cruise tours, hotel coupons, smart vacuum cleaners and jewelries valued more than 2.8 million yuan (US$437,500).
Shopping malls, department stores and supermarkets will all take part in online and offline activities to present a digitized festival.
Some retailers will invite e-business owners to offer deals in stores.
“We want more people to take part in the festival, make it more fashionable and with more technology,” said Wu Xingbao, vice chairman of the commission. “Shanghai wants to become a global shopping center that will match cities like New York, London and Hong Kong. To make it truly international, we have to offer world-class products and services,” Wu said.
To attract more people from outside Shanghai, the commission said it would release a special card during the festival. The card will contain information about the city’s commercial activities, including the best places to live, eat and entertain.
The shopping festival will coincide with the city’s tourism festival that includes celebrations for the Mid-Autumn Festival on September 27 and the National Day holiday starting October 1.
