City has more area of wetlands
SHANGHAI has 377,000 hectares of wetlands, up 50,000 hectares from a decade ago, the city government said yesterday.
The increase has been attributed to environment protection measures and new technology used to measure the wetlands.
The wetlands, which help agriculture growth and improve ecological environment, accounts for more than half of the city’s land area.
Most of the wetlands are located in suburban Qingpu District, the Pudong New Area and Chongming County.
Eighty percent of these wetlands are in coastal areas. The artificial wetlands, including artificial lakes and reservoirs, accounting for 15 percent of the wetlands, expanded an extra 5,330 hectares in the past decade. The wetland protection rate also increased — from 22.4 percent to 34.5 percent.
