City issues alert for Huangpu River flooding
Water in the city’s Huangpu River reached an alarm level this morning due to the double whammy of Typhoon Trami and high tides, local flood control officials said today.
The water level at Wusongkou, the mouth of Huangpu River, swelled to 4.8 meters, beyond the danger mark by 0.02 meters at 12:50am this morning, the officials said.
The water level at the confluence of Suzhou Creek and Huangpu River exceeded the danger mark by 0.05 meters while the river’s upstream water level surpassed the mark by 0.1 meters.
Shanghai’s flood control headquarters issued an alert to district and county governments and related departments, urging them to take emergency measures to prevent the river from overflowing and flooding the city.
The city’s drainage system will be paralyzed if the Huangpu River overflows and inundates the city, the officials warned.
