City police bust fake condom ring, seizing 3 million Durex, Jissbon counterfeits
A ring of nine people have been arrested by city police for allegedly producing and selling fake brand condoms of more than 12 million yuan (US$1.93 million) during the recent one year.
The fake condoms were believed to have been sold in Shanghai, Henan, Anhui, Zhejiang, Hubei, Guangdong, Jiangsu and Shaanxi provinces.
More than 3 million pieces of the counterfeits, mostly faking brands such as Durex and Jissbon, were seized.
City police announced yesterday they recently busted the ring and caught the suspects involved. Their investigation started after some local residents reported last May that a woman was suspected to be buying materials from out of town to produce condoms in massive numbers in a rented flat in local Yangpu District.
Police said the woman, surnamed Li, a prime suspect in the case, had been selling the fake products to other wholesalers on QQ, China’s popular social networking tool.
Police said most of the fake condoms were eventually supplied at small inns.
The fake condoms contained harmful amount of heavy metals, police said.
