City seeks input on public areas revamp work

THE city’s top planning body is inviting local architects, artists and landscape designers to give public areas in some old residential communities a facelift, officials said over the weekend.

Eleven communities built in the 1970s will be the first neighborhoods to have their green spaces, parking and rest areas revamped, an official with the Shanghai Planning, Land and Resources Administration said.
The designers and artists will publicize their plans in June to solicit public input and the renovations will be completed by the end of the year.
The work will mainly focus on old facilities such as gardens that are currently inaccessible to residents, rundown bicycle sheds and public squares being used for parking. The designs will take into account the increasing number of private vehicles and growing population density, said the administration.
An abandoned pump station in Shiquan Road Subdistrict in Putuo, one of the selected communities, will be converted into a fashionable office building.
“I was attracted by the six-meter-tall pump station surrounded by two old trees as soon as I entered the community,” said Wu Huaiguo, design supervisor with JWDA Shanghai, a US design company’s local branch. “It has infinite potential.”
The first communities in line for facelifts are Changning, Jing’an, Xuhui, Putuo, Qingpu districts and Pudong New Area.
Individual designers or companies can apply to take part in the project by emailing walking_sh@sdpcus.com.
The planning phase will run through July and the work will start in August and run through late November.
