City to offer 150 yuan subsidy to low-income families
LOW-INCOME families in Shanghai will each receive a 150 yuan (US$21.90) subsidy before the Spring Festival.
Each family that qualifies will get a "temporary holiday subsidy coupon" to buy food and daily necessities at designated shops, the Shanghai Civil Affairs Bureau said.
Shanghai will spend 350 million yuan (US$51 million) to help less fortunate locals. Seniors, the disabled and the unemployed can also receive a subsidy before the start of Chinese New Year.
The bureau defines a low-income family as having an average income of 400 yuan or less per person each month.
The subsidy is intended to both help needy residents enjoy the Spring Festival holiday and give a boost to consumer spending to help the economy.
Similar subsidies are being offered in other parts of the country.
Chengdu families who are on the so-called "five guarantees" list, which provides food, clothing, medical care, housing and burial expenses, will each get a 100-yuan shopping coupon.
Jiangsu Province plans to give each member of a needy family 100 yuan for the Spring Festival.
The Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region has offered each of its low-income residents up to 100 yuan in cash. The hand out will cost the local government 212.46 million yuan.
The Spring Festival starts on January 25 this year.
