City to upgrade drainage system

THE city government yesterday announced plan to upgrade the drainage network in a bid to prevent flooding during future rainy seasons.

The Shanghai Water Authority said in a statement that a large percentage of the existing system was prone to flooding and was in need of renovation and improvement.

While it did not provide a full timetable for the scheme, the authority said the works will include the construction of 120 monitoring stations before the end of the year.

Authorities in Jiading District, meanwhile, said that they plan to spend 40 million yuan (US$6.3 million) on the upgrading and renovation of the local drainage network.

Again, no time frame was given, but local officials said the project will include the construction of new tunnels and drains, the dredging of rivers and the development of several new monitoring stations.
