City traffic violator is a wanted fraudster
A MAN who was detained in Shanghai for traffic violation turned out to be an economic offender on the run and wanted by police in several provinces, Shanghai police said yesterday.
In February, the man, surnamed Zhou, had illegally parked his Mercedes-Benz, which was without a plate, at the crossroads of Changshu Road and Huaihai Road M. in Xuhui District. When a policeman approached him, he tried to flee with the policeman hanging on the hood of the car.
Police later discovered that he was also using a fake identity card.
A DNA test confirmed that Zhou was a swindler on the run and wanted by police in Gansu, Shaanxi, Guangdong and Shandong provinces. He is suspected to have defrauded several companies of millions of yuan.
Zhou will first be tried for traffic offense in Shanghai and then handed over to police in other provinces, authorities said.
