City’s doctors battle to save baby’s hand
A 9-day-old baby underwent emergency surgery on Christmas Eve to save her left hand after her parents tied an elastic band around her wrist to keep a mitten in place.
Doctors at Xinhua Hospital said they conducted a fasciotomy on the infant’s arm — a surgical procedure that involves cutting deep into the tissue to relieve pressure — in a bid to save her hand.
The child’s parents said they took baby Yuanyuan to hospital after her hand turned purple. The elastic band had been on her wrist for about 16 hours, they said.
After the operation, doctors said they were confident they had saved the hand, but were unsure how much damage might have been caused.
“It will take time to see if any of the hand’s functions have been impaired,” a doctor said.
The child has been in hospital since her operation and will remain under close observation, they said.
Officials said the case should serve as a warning to all parents not to tie mittens or gloves too tightly onto their babies’ hands.
