City’s fires more than double with twice as many casualties as last year
FIRES in Shanghai this year have more than doubled in number and casualties compared with the same period last year, officials said today.
By Tuesday, the city had had 8,380 fires, killing 59 people and injuring 71, said Zhao Zixin, director of the Shanghai Fire Prevention Bureau.
The city had 3,175 blazes and 64 casualties during the same period last year.
This year’s fires caused economic losses more than 100 million yuan (US$16.4 million), officials said today.
Since Shanghai is dry in the winter and many holidays are coming up, authorities said they will launch a series of prevention campaigns, including intensive fire escape drills in residential communities and crackdowns on firecracker makers.
