City鈥檚 railway stations boost security

Machines that detect dangerous liquids have been installed in the city’s three main railway stations to improve security.

Shanghai Railway Station, Shanghai Hongqiao Railway Station and Shanghai South Railway Station have installed the machines to detect dangerous liquids without having to open containers.

Railway police said the machines speed up security checks and help avoid potential conflicts. Before the machines were installed, passengers were asked to open a bottle or container for security staff to check liquids. Some passengers were even required to take a sip when they claimed a suspicious liquid was a beverage.

Police said on Tuesday that the machines detected 21.3 kilograms of paint, 80 bottles of hairspray and some liquefied butane at Shanghai South Railway Station since October 31.

Police added the machines could eventually be installed at other transport hubs in the city.
