City鈥檚 too-hot dogs get taste for human flesh
THE recent warm weather has led to an increase in the number of people in the Pudong New Area being treated for dog bites, a doctor said yesterday.
“Summer is always the peak season for dog bites, as animals can get irritable when they are too hot,” Dr Gao Dunmin, director of the emergency department at Punan Hospital, which is home to one of four specialist dog bite clinics in the area.
Compared with earlier in the year, the number of people being treated at the clinics — the others are at the Shanghai No. 7 People’s Hospital, Pudong New Area People’s Hospital and Zhoupu Hospital — has risen by 30 percent to about 150 a day, Gao said.
Punan Hospital is the busiest of the four facilities, treating an average of 50 to 60 patients a day, Gao said.
It was not clear yesterday whether the increase was a citywide phenomenon or a localized problem.
People aged from 2 to 75 have been treated for bites in recent weeks, an unnamed hospital official said.
Most of the injuries were to the hands and feet, but “some were to people’s faces,” Gao said, adding that dog owners should avoid getting too close to their pets’ mouths.
Some people were bitten by other people’s dogs in the street, as the owners “did not keep their animals on a leash,” he said.
Because of the risk of contracting rabies, anyone who is bitten by a dog should seek medical advice as soon as possible, Gao said.
According to figures from the Shanghai Health and Family Planning Commission, three people died from rabies in the city last year.
