Classic work gets modern makeover

VISITORS will have chance to see a 3D animated version of “Along the River During Qingming Festival” at the China Art Museum, the former China Pavilion at Expo 2010, during the Shanghai International Science and Art Exhibition from August 12 to 21.
The 3D animated version has been shown at the current World Expo in Milan, Italy.
The China Pavilion is also home to the first animated version of the painting, whose original scroll was created by Zhang Zeduan in the Song Dynasty (960-1279) to capture the daily life and lifestyle of people at that time.
People can see two versions of “Along the River During Qingming Festival” in the same place during the festival, said officials from the Shanghai Association of Science and Technology, the exhibition organizer.
The original 25.2cm x 528.7cm handscroll depicting 814 people, 73 domestic animals, more than 20 vehicles, 29 boats and many types of buildings, bridges and city walls is kept in the Palace Museum in the Forbidden City in Beijing, but it is rarely exhibited to prevent damage.
As well as the spectacular 3D exhibit, many other items connecting science and art — such as glass art pieces and 3D-printed jewelry — will be shown during the festival.
