Cleaner fuel available at 10 downtown gas stations

Ten Sinopec pump stations in downtown Shanghai yesterday began offering higher quality gasoline similar to Euro V standard fuel as the city continues its efforts to reduce pollution.
Prices remain unchanged, at least for now.
Under the so-called National V standard, the 90, 93 and 97-octane fuels have been replaced by cleaner 89, 92 and 95-octane gasoline respectively. The new fuels have less sulfur and manganese.
Sinopec, which has about 70 percent of the Shanghai market, said it plans to complete the upgrade at all its stations by the end of October.
It plans to offer the cleaner fuels at all 49 of its stations within the Inner Ring Road before September 20.
Sinopec will also start offering National V diesel at selected stations from mid-September and at all its stations by the end of October.
Tong Xiaojun, deputy general manager of Sinopec’s Shanghai branch, said prices will remain unchanged at least until the company completes the upgrade at all its local stations.
“After that, we will leave it (pricing) to the National Development and Reform Commission,” he said, referring to China’s top planning agency, which sets energy prices.
