Clear skies as autumn equinox draws near

AS Qiufen, or autumn equinox, draws near, forecasters are predicting clear skies for the start of the week followed by the occasional rain and dip in weather.

Qiufen, which falls on Wednesday, signifies that day and night will be of equal length in the middle of autumn. An old Chinese saying says that with the advent of Qiufen, thunder begins to soften and wetness begins to solidify, while insects often start to make their nests.

Gray clouds that edged closer to the city because of a rain belt moved away yesterday, ensuring dry and clear skies today. But tomorrow, an upper trough will affect the city bringing rains with it. The overcast conditions are expected to last into the weekend.

The wet weather will also bring down temperatures during the Mid-Autumn Festival which falls on Sunday.

The high will mainly stay at 27 degrees Celsius during the week but dip slightly on Wednesday and Friday to 26 degrees.

Sunday was the ninth day with the air quality fitting into a perfect or good level. The concentration of prime pollutant PM2.5 particles stayed below 50 micrograms per cubic meter yesterday. It is likely to stay that way today.
