'Clever guy' gold thief gets 11-year jail
A THIEF, described as "a clever guy" by prosecutors, was yesterday jailed for 11 years for conning city department stores into giving him 2 kilograms of gold bars.
Lu Hantao, 34, a Shandong Province native, last Christmas used forged receipts to get 10 gold bars valued at more than 610,000 yuan (US$93,846).
The gold was later recovered.
Jin Yarong, deputy director of the Huangpu District Prosecutors' Office, said department stores should improve security as Lu had taken advantage of loopholes to dupe staff.
Lu pleaded guilty at the hearing yesterday. He said the idea came to him when he bought a 10-gram Expo souvenir gold bar at Yong'an Department Store last October, after visiting the Expo site.
The shop assistant didn't accompany him to the cashier. And after he paid the cashier and returned to the assistant with the stamped receipt to collect his goods, she didn't check it carefully.
Lu realized that if he used forged receipts he could con stores into handing over gold bars, the Huangpu District People's Court heard.
Lu designed fake receipts on a computer and forged cash receipt stamps. As gold prices fluctuate, Lu made dozens of fake receipts based on different gold prices ranging from 307 yuan to 309 yuan per gram, the court heard.
"He's a very clever guy, but he didn't use his intelligence in the right way," Jin said.
Lu put his plan into action on Christmas Day last year and succeeded in duping staff.
The stores targeted were Yong'an, New World, Shanghai No. 1 department stores and Oriental Department Store's Wujiaochang outlet.
Lu was caught in January.
