Close but no cigar for Jinling buildings
THE Huangpu District government yesterday confirmed its plans to demolish several buildings on Jinling Road E. despite their proximity to an arcade that was recently saved from the wrecking ball.
“The buildings in question are not protected like the arcade houses and will therefore be knocked down as planned,” an official with the district housing authority said.
The announcement was made after the owner of the row set to tumble appealed it to be saved.
“Why is that my buildings are being demolished when the ones nearby will be saved?” landlord Zhang Jin asked Shanghai Daily yesterday.
Late last month, a row of arcade houses, or qilou, on Jinling Road, near Xizang Road South, was saved following an appeal by local residents and property experts.
Despite the amnesty, other buildings in the area remain destined to be razed as part of the development of the subway network, the housing official said.
The five-story block owned by Zhang will be pulled down to make way for a ventilation shaft and passenger access to Dashijie station on Metro Line 14.
