Clouds, rain on cards over long weekend
THE man in the moon is unlikely to make an appearance during this year’s Mid-Autumn Festival, as the night skies are set to be filled with clouds, forecasters said yesterday.
Daytimes, too, will be overcast, and there is a strong possibility of rain today and on Monday, the Shanghai Meteorological Bureau said.
Temperatures over the long holiday weekend are expected to range between 23 and 30 degrees Celsius, it said.
Despite the gloomy outlook, police are expecting an increase in traffic, especially on Monday — the festival’s official date — when families traditionally head out in the hope of seeing a full moon.
Congestion is most likely near shopping centers, parks and other scenic spots, they said.
According to the traffic authority, the number of vehicles entering and exiting Shanghai via the city’s expressways is expected to rise 10 percent this year to 1.35 million, with roads to Chongming expected to be particularly busy.
Bus operators are also expecting a boost in traffic between Shanghai and Chongming Island, and said they have laid on extra vehicles to cope with the increased demand.
