Committee set up to coordinate food safety measures

Shanghai government set up a food safety committee yesterday to free locals from worries about the food safety.

"We'll make Shanghai one of the cities in China where food is safest," Mayor Han Zheng pledged yesterday.

The new committee will coordinate efforts by the city's three food safety watchdogs -- the Shanghai Food and Drug Administration, Shanghai Administration for Industry and Commerce, and Shanghai Quality and Technical Supervision Bureau.

As one of the regulating measures, supermarkets will be required to remind customers to check the shelf life of food products before buying them.

Local supermarkets are required to put up an eye-catching notice to tell customers that certain foods are near expiration and buyers will not be able to return expired goods for refund, according to the new regulation.
