Companies told to close in Jinshan crackdown

JINSHAN District will close more than 460 companies by the end of next month for violating various regulations in its campaign to improve the environment and tighten business controls, district officials said yesterday.

Offences include illegally occupying land, illegal construction, unlicensed operations and illegal waste discharged. Some companies were deemed safety hazards.

The Jinshan District Environmental Protection Bureau said many companies were operating inefficiently or polluting the environment.

The bureau called for cooperation from the district’s Safety Supervision Bureau and the Urban Management and Market Supervision Authorities.

The Environment Bureau’s enforcement team cited the example of the Yipin Furniture Company which rented space from a factory in Shanyang Town as its furniture producing workshop, one of the operations ordered to close.

It said the company did not store its hazardous materials, including paint and chemicals safely and workers were not using safety masks. The operation was creating a pungent smell and did not have an explosion-proof area.

Another company in Shanyang Town, the Shanghai Haorui Industrial Company, which manufactures vehicle baseboards was found to own 1,500 square meters of illegal construction.

The owner has agreed to close within a month.

The 463 companies have been listed in the first batch of businesses to close.

The district government formed 14 supervision teams to crack down on violations in about 2,500 companies around the district.
