Company suspended for its truck damaging iconic bridge

QINSHUN, the company whose truck damaged the iconic Waibaidu Bridge on the Bund in late April, will be ordered to suspend its business for a month due to illegal transportation of construction waste, Shanghai traffic police said on Friday.
In the accident on the early morning of April 25, the driver of the truck illegally drove onto the bridge which bans all trucks, and damaged a part of the 109-year-old steel truss bridge.
Police said trucks transporting construction waste have caused casualties in 13 accidents with 12 involving deaths from January to April this year.
Four of the 13 accidents took place in Pudong with two in each of the three districts Minhang, Qingpu and Fengxian, and in 11 accidents the truck drivers were assigned major or full responsibility.
Nine of the accidents were caused by drivers failing to properly give way to other traffic participants, and in seven such accidents, the trucks were taking a right turn without letting bikes pass in front of them first.
Other frequent offenses from the trucks included overloading, driving in a wrong lane, using a bike lane and not setting up warning signs properly when running into mechanical problems on an expressway, police said.
Police said they have given a detailed inspection to 12 companies whose trucks caused those accidents and found common anomalies of faulty GPS tracking control, insufficient road safety education to drivers and inertia in dealing with traffic offenses from the drivers.
Chuanbao, one of the companies, has already been ordered to suspend its business for a month, while nine others have been or will be given admonition.
Meanwhile, a company called Chuanhong was found to be transporting construction waste without a license.
