Compensation amount raised for cab driver

THE Xuhui District People’s Court increased the compensation amount for a taxi driver who was beaten up by a teenager in 2013.

A trial court had ordered the 19-year-old teen, surnamed Qian, to pay 430,000 yuan compensation last year, while also sentencing him to four-and-a-half years in jail.

The Xuhui District People’s Court said yesterday it had raised the compensation amount for the driver to 500,000 yuan (US$75,833).

Labelled a fuerdai, or “rich second generation,” Qian would often get into a dispute with his girlfriend.

On November 16, 2013, he had another fallout with her, following which she hailed a cab and left. Qian chased her in his car and forced the taxi to stop. The cab driver, 63-year-old Miao, got out of his taxi and admonished him for his behavior. That infuriated Qian further, who beat him up, causing serious injuries on his head.

The compensation was to cover Miao’s treatment, rehabilitation and for physical and emotional stress.

Qian had appealed against the trial court’s verdict but it was rejected.
